It most likely will affect your benefits. If you are receiving Income Support in lieu of Jobseekers Allowance then by taking a college course you will become unavailable to work and therefore your benefits will stop. If you are claiming Income Support because you are unfit for work then the same would apply - they presume that if you are fit enough to do a college course you are fit enough to work!!! Students in general aren't eligible to receive Income Support, they have to rely on grants/loans or part time work.
I'm not sure about the rules for Income Support and Carers Allowance, plus I'm also unsure how the fact that the course would be distance learning would affect you. I work for the DWP myself but this is not a situation I've come accross before. Most likely your benefits would be affected. I would recommend you consult your local Jobcentre about this and also look at this website:
A bursary of £9,000 would almost certainly wipe out your benefits, although check on the above website as to whether there would be anything else you would be entitled to. As the above poster says, income of £87 would cancel your Carers Allowance.
The bursary is for both course costs and living costs. You would be expected to take a part time job and tax credits etc to make up whatever else you needed to live on.
I think it's unlikely because, when my mum died I was claiming carers allowance for caring for her, and it was paid for 8 weeks after her death. She spent many weeks in hospital and I did ask if I had to cancel the benefit whilst she was being treated in hospital, it wasn't cancelled, and you are NOT committing fraud by continuing to claim it. Here is the phone number for the carers allowance department in Preston England. 01253 856123.
hope this helps, and I wish your gran a speedy recovery.
